Counterfile

About

Counterfile is the brainchild of a labor and employment attorney with more than two decades of litigation and transactional experience. Years in the courtroom and at the negotiating table taught her a simple truth: employees are far stronger when they can tell their story through their own records, rather than relying on what HR kept, or didn't.

Questions

What happens when I change jobs?

You start a new log for the new employer. On Starter you keep one job open at a time, so you archive the old one first; on Pro you can run several at once. Either way there's no limit on how many jobs you have over a career, and your old entries stay with you.

What does archiving mean?

Archiving closes a job's log to new entries, for when you've moved on. Your entries stay viewable and printable, and a retention clock starts before they're erased: six months on Starter, twelve on Pro, each with one six-month extension. We warn you twice and prompt you to export first.

Can my employer see this?

No. Your Counterfile is yours alone, and we never share it. Your entries are encrypted while they travel and while they are stored, and uploaded files aren't stored with us at all: they ride along on the email to your inbox and are then deleted from our servers. The only way anything is shared is a Pro share link you create for someone you choose, and you can revoke it anytime.

Where do my uploaded files go?

They're attached to the cover-sheet email delivered to your inbox, then deleted from our servers. We keep the log of your entries as a searchable index; you keep the evidence. Nothing sensitive sits on our servers to be breached or subpoenaed.

Should I use a new email to get CFile entries delivered?

Use a personal email you control, never your work email, since your employer can access that. Many people set up a dedicated inbox just for their Counterfile. On Pro you can also copy every entry to a second inbox, like your attorney's.

What about audio or video recordings?

We never store recordings. You note that one exists and keep the file yourself; the app helps you send it to your own inbox so it sits with the entry. That keeps you in control and keeps anything sensitive off our servers.

What if I cancel?

Cancelling stops future billing at the end of your current period, and you keep access until then. Cover sheets already delivered to your inbox are always yours. Your account stays put, so you can resubscribe and pick up where you left off, or delete your account to remove everything.

Can I get my whole record as one document?

Anytime. View and print your log from the Dashboard. Pro exports your entire history as a single polished PDF, and each Minifile exports on its own.
